The things you carry can tell about you: where you are going, where you have been, and how ridiculously big your bag may be. I've received enough questions to realize the later is true for me. Here's what I carry in my bag on the typical day to work:
1.) Copy of Denver traffic regulations, appendix 4 that pertains to bicycles
2.) Wallet
3.) Hair goop
4.) U-lock
5.) Check book (not that I write checks, I whip it out just to mess with proprietors)
6.) iPod accessories (headphones, power cord)
7.) iPod
8.) Lunch
9.) Mini bike pump
10.) Tubes (mountain and road)
11.) Tools (chain tool, spoke tool, cresent wrench, full set of hex wrenches, tire levers, #15 wrench, pedal wrench, patch kit, chainring bolt wrench, multi-tool
12.) Lights (front and rear)
13.) Clothes for work
14.) Camera
15.) Cell phone
16.) Random stuff (USB drive, cell charger, chapstick, visine, gum)
17.) Bag: Chrome "No, I'm not a messenger" Kremlin
This typical load still leaves a lot of space in my bag, which is nice - because I sometimes carry a laptop, boxes of marketing materials, extra winter clothes, and severed heads (oops).

I met up with Will tonight as he was kind enough to offer his brain in the name of science. I was sharing with him the joys of my new messenger bag and all of the delightful things I get to carry around now that I have this Gigantic Bag. I thought I might share:
Here's what I managed to fit (with room to spare):
1. Sigg water bottle
2. Coffee Mug
3. Bike repair kit
4. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (manuals; pencils; blocks to play with and timer)
5. Little bag of toiletries
6. iPod
7. Sunglasses case with sunglasses, eyeglasses case with spectacles
8. Fork
9. Toothbrush
10. Pencil case
11. Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans (yeah!)
12. Harness, locking carabiner, reverso
13. Climbing shoes, chalk bag
14. FREE rope from the nice guy at the DU climbing gym
15. Cognitive Assessment Folder
16. Legal Pad
17. Wonder Woman Day Planner
18. Deodorant (it's getting warm out, eh?)
Not pictured: U-Lock (U-Lock it, U-Leave it DU policy), cell phone and all the treats that Will and I ate during the tests I ran on him.
Pictured but not in bag: My dog's stinky butt (could probably fit him though!)

Sometimes I travel light, with just an old Eastern Mountain Sports hiking fanny pack slung bandolier style over shoulder and containing a tangerine and some paper clips.
Yesterday was a bit different, I was pretty much fully loaded, and have bruises on my spine to prove it.

Within my large Speedo backpack (re-appropriated from my little brother's swimming career), I carried the following:
A light brown lamb's wool scarf (Made in Scotland!)
A mini U-lock and a pocket Alan Wrench set
Rock Climbing Harness & Shoes
Half eaten 1 lb bag of Pecans, 1 Clementine, 1 sample size Clif Nectar bar, 1 Lara bar, 1 Clif Bar
4 short ends of Rock Climbing Rope (approx 30 feet each)
1 Three ring binder, a copy of "Think for Yourself" by Steve Hindes
All told, this was about 40 lbs I think, mainly from the rope. If there's one thing I will never say no to, it's Free, High Quality Rope. I will have a tire swing in my yard within the month in case anyone is jonesing to play on one.
